The Cannon House Office Building, often called the “Old House Office Building,” was completed in 1908 and is the oldest office building of the United States Congress in Washington, D.C. It is located on Capitol Hill, very close to the United States Capitol and the impressive Library of Congress.
Members of the House of Representatives – elected citizens who represent congressional districts from all 50 states – have their offices and staff there. These offices are used for constituent services, legislative work, meetings, and day-to-day staff operations.
Visiting the Cannon House was an impressive experience. What makes it truly special is that everyone is welcome to enter at any time, without an appointment or explanation. You simply use one of the public entrances, go through a quick routine security check, and then you are free to explore the building at your own pace. You can walk through the halls, visit the offices of elected members, and speak with their staff — or even the members themselves, if they are available.
You are allowed to take photos throughout the building. The cafeteria is open to visitors, and you can even use it to work on your computer. No one treats you like an outsider — it feels as if you belong. It’s a unique opportunity to get a firsthand look at how the heart of the USA’s democracy functions, in a very open and accessible way.
