Souks are traditional markets, deeply rooted in over a century of trading history in the UAE and across the Middle East. The oldest souks in Deira and Bur Dubai date back to the early 1900s, when Dubai was a small but bustling trading port. These markets were central hubs for international trade, connecting the region to India, Persia, and East Africa, with goods such as pearls, spices, textiles, and gold.
Souks in the Middle East are traditionally specialized. Traditionally, markets in Arabic cities are divided by type of goods. This keeps business organized and makes it easier for customers:
- Gold Souk – jewelry
- Spice Souk – spices and herbs
- Textile Souk – fabrics
- Perfume Souk – fragrances
Today, the souks retain their historic charm, with narrow lanes, vibrant stalls, and merchants practicing the age-old art of bargaining, offering visitors a glimpse into Dubai’s rich trading heritage.
